GIS Exercises for ArcView 3.x

These exercises use Kentucky data to look at advanced topics in ArcView 3.x GIS--working with the Spatial Analyst , Geoprocessor, USDA Soil Data Viewer, and other extensions, using Avenue requests for table editing, using digital elevation models, contouring, using Avenue scripts, customizing ArcView, buffering, and others. Anyone with a basic knowledge of ArcView 3.x GIS might benefit from these exercises.

You should create a folder to put the exercise in before downloading. Then unzip the exercise in the folder. Exercises are available from

Exercise 1

You will create a view in ArcView that displays only Fayette County and Fayette County state maintained roads. You will create a hotlink connecting a text file of information to the Fayette County theme. You will calculate the miles of state maintained roads per square mile for the county.

Exercise 4

We are concerned with groundwater pollution to Lake Herrington in Mercer County. This is karst county, there are groundwater flow channels in the dissolved limestone beneath the surface. One evidence of this is the sinkholes in the area. We need the location and depth of the sinkholes in a GIS. We want to create a theme of sinkholes using a 1:24,000 topographic map. Exercise 5

You can reproject a theme in ArcView using either the projection wizard or projector extension (I prefer the latter). This reprojecting process does not, however, allow you to change the datum. More and more GIS themes or coverages have a datum of NAD 83, but there are still many data sets with NAD 27. A free extension is available that will allow you to change the datum of a theme. (The theme must be in decimal degrees, but you can use the projectors to get into dd if necessary.)

Exercise 7

We are interested in setting up a water quality monitoring program in Woodford County. We want to measure possible relationships between ground water and surface water. We want to sample wells and nearby streams. We want to determine the cost of purchasing riparian rights.

Exercise 10 -- Using the USDA-NRCS Soil Data Viewer

This exercise looks at the USDA-NRCS Soil Data Viewer extension and how it is used to develop tables and maps relating soils to land use, agriculture, construction, etc.
